Minister of Transport Kamel al-Wazir said that an integrated plan has been drawn up to develop and upgrade the road and bridges network nationwide.
This plan, he added, is correlated with the comprehensive development plans in all agricultural, industrial, and tourism sectors, and meant to link urban centres with economic and production hubs across Egypt, and to develop new un-populated areas.
Addressing a plenary session of the House of Deputies yesterday, Minister al-Wazir also said the plan aims to enhance opportunities for economic integration with neighbouring countries and to establish a number of flyovers, to avoid intersections on roads and with railway lines.
The road and bridges sector has witnessed a great leap, which was reflected on Egypt ranking in the road quality at the international competitiveness indexes, Wazir said, adding “Egypt jumped 90 places from the 118th to the 28th place – at the Competitiveness Index. The development of road sector helped reduce the road accident mortality rate by 44 per cent during 2019/20.
Wazir revealed that his ministry plans to implement 1,769 roads and bridges projects at a total cost of LE464 billion until 2024. He pointed out that roughly 1,052 projects, with a total cost of LE254.3 billion, have already been completed and other 642 projects, at a total cost of LE114 billion, are being implemented.
He noted that the ministry plans to start implementing 75 projects at a cost of LE95.7 billion nationwide until 2024.
