Egypt bent on new excellence benchmark as it readies to host 2027 African Games 1 - Egyptian Gazette

Egypt moves ahead with a determined focus to prepare for hosting the 2027 African Games, a commitment that signals the nation’s leadership in continental sports and its vision for African unity.

This resolve was recently put on display during a high-level preparatory meeting led by Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhi.

The purpose of the meeting was to finalize a crucial memorandum of understanding between the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), the Association of African Sports Confederations (AASC), and the African Political Union (APU).

This step is not merely bureaucratic, but a strategic move, with Minister Sobhi explaining that he had actively worked to resolve all disputes between the ANOCA and the AASC before the organizational process began.

This action is designed to remove all obstacles to Egypt’s hosting of the tournament and ensure it performs in a manner that befits Egypt and the African continent, the minister said, demonstrating Egypt’s commitment to ensuring a seamless event for all participants.

Egypt’s determination to host the tournament is deeply rooted in a rich history with the continental event.

The upcoming games will mark the second time the North African nation has held the multi-sport competition.

The previous edition Egypt hosted was the 5th All-Africa Games in Cairo in 1991, an event that gave the African country the chance to prove a resounding success, both as a host and a competitor, with Egyptian athletes dominating the medal table.

Egypt achieved a spectacular victory, finishing 1st overall with a total of 195 medals, including 90 Gold, 53 Silver, and 52 Bronze.

This performance cemented Egypt’s status as a sporting powerhouse, capable of delivering excellence on both the organizational and competitive fronts.

Furthermore, the very concept of the African Games has ties to Egypt’s pioneering spirit, with attempts to host a pan-African sporting event in Alexandria dating back to 1928, showcasing a century-long commitment to the ideal of African sporting unity.

This legacy of hosting and winning underpins the current ambition. Egypt holds the unparalleled record as the most successful nation in the history of the African Games, having topped the medal table in the majority of editions.

The country has maintained a recent streak of dominance, emerging as the overall champion in the last three consecutive Games: 2015 (Brazzaville), 2019 (Rabat), and 2023 (Accra).

The latest victory in Accra was historic, as Egypt became the first country ever to break the barrier of 100 Gold medals in a single edition, securing an astonishing 102 Gold medals among their total haul of 192.

This consistent, top-tier achievement demonstrates a thriving sporting culture and world-class athletic programmes, which provide an essential foundation for the 2027 Games.

The preparatory meeting itself, attended by figures like ANOCA President Mustapha Berraf, AASC President Maj. Gen. Ahmed Nasser, and Egyptian Olympic Committee President Eng. Yasser Idris, was characterized by a fruitful dialogue that resulted in the convergence of views and confirmation of full coordination between the two sides.

This pursuit of a unified vision by Minister Sobhi and the Egyptian leadership shows their commitment to transcending the political and administrative challenges that have sometimes complicated the continental sports landscape.

By harmonizing the efforts of the continent’s major sporting and political bodies, Egypt is signalling its determination to leverage the 2027 African Games, not just as a sporting contest, but as a powerful vehicle for African integration and collaborative success.

The ambition is clear: to host a world-class tournament that reflects the continent’s progress and sets a new benchmark for excellence.
