Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Badr Abdelatty lauded Liberia’s support for Egyptian candidate Khaled El-Enany for the post of UNESCO director-general.
The UNESCO Executive Board will convene on Monday to elect the agency’s next director-general.
Abdelatty’s comments came during his meeting with Liberian Education Minister Jarso Maley Jallah, on the sidelines of the UNESCO Executive Board meeting in Paris, according to a statement released by the foreign ministry.
The foreign minister said Liberia’s backing of Enany reflects its commitment to strengthening African unity behind the Egyptian candidate endorsed by three resolutions of African Union summits.
He noted this unified African stance underscores Africa’s determination to enhance its representation within international organizations, in a manner that serves the shared interests of all African nations.
On her part, the Liberian minister commended Enany’s outstanding qualifications and extensive experience, as he possesses a comprehensive vision and solid international expertise that make him well-suited for leading the UN agency with competence and distinction.
