CAIRO – Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi affirmed that the projects currently being implemented represent a successful model of the ministry’s strategy, which aims at maximising the economic benefits of refinery infrastructure in order to meet local market demands and reduce the import bill for petroleum products.

He emphasised the importance of highlighting success stories within the petroleum sector to serve as examples and inspiration for others.

He also directed that greater opportunities be provided for women to participate across various facilities and operations within the refinery, recognizing their vital role and ability to contribute to enhanced performance and support ongoing development and modernisation efforts.

This came during Badawi’s field visit to the Amreya Petroleum Refining Company in Alexandria, where he followed up on modernization and development projects aimed at maximising the economic value of the company’s production complexes.

The projects are designed to boost output of gasoline, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and high-quality lubricants, in addition to specialized products for various industries in which the company has a competitive edge.

For his part, company Chairman Mohamed Sobhi presented an overview of the ongoing projects, which are being carried out with a total investment exceeding EGP 2 billion.

These projects aim to increase both production and storage capacities. Key among them is the reactivation of the hydrogen production unit, with a capacity of 5,000 cubic meters per hour, which had been inactive for 13 years and is now set to support lubricant production.

Sobhi also noted that the development of the reforming and aromatics complex includes the addition of a new unit that will increase gasoline production by around 100,000 tons annually and produce gasoline, a key input in various industries.

In addition, a project to enhance LPG production is expected to yield significant financial savings, along with the construction of a new 12-kilometer cooling water pipeline to support sustainable operations.
