President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has called for BRICS member-states to consider launching joint projects in such vital sectors as new and renewable energy, infrastructure, transformative industries and innovation, together with enhancing co-operation between their private sectors.
The call was contained in an address the Egyptian leader delivered online on Monday to an extraordinary BRICS summit called by Brazil, the group’s current chair. President Sisi thanked Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for having invited the virtual, extraordinary summit to convene.
In his address, President Sisi stressed the importance of the BRICS bloc as a rising international forum heading steadily towards consolidating constructive co-operation between its member-states, emanating from the principles of shared benefit, mutual respect and enhancing multilateral action.
President Sisi lauded yesterday’s summit as opportunity for consultation and the exchange of visions on ways to deepen complementation between member-states and coordinating their efforts to mitigate the impact of current crises, therefore contributing effectively to the formulation of a fairer and more balanced world order.
In this context, President Sisi pointed to the present position of the United Nations Security Council as a clear example of systemic dysfunction that has adversely and directly affected the confidence of countries of the world in the UN system.
Such an erosion of credibility, President Sisi said, has prompted several countries to demand comprehensive reform of the UNSC’s mechanisms of action – a trend that has involved clear call for annuling the Council’s veto power that has over the time rendered the Council detached from today’s global realities and incapable of fulfilling its core mandate of maintaining international peace and security.
Emphasising that the economic challenges the world is now facing are not separable from aggravating geopolitical tensions, referring in this connection to the consecutive crises in the Middle East which impact peace and stability and obstruct sustainable development.
In the heart of these crises is the Israeli war on the brotherly Palestinian people in Gaza Strip, along with blatant violations committed by the occupation in the West Bank, constituting one of most dangerous conflicts and the most indicative representation of double standards and breaching international law rules, the president said.
Elaborating, President Sisi reasserted Egypt’s firm position of categorically rejecting any scenario for displacing the Palestinians from their land under any pretext since any such displacement would be an attempt to liquidate the Palestinian cause and undermine the two-state solution.
On the economic front, President Sisi said that developing countries are grappling with widening disparities, unsustainable debt levels, and limited access to affordable financial resources.
He further called for enhanced co-operation among BRICS nations to confront these shared challenges and support inclusive development, particularly by increasing investment in sectors such as renewable energy, infrastructure, manufacturing, agriculture, technology, and research.
On climate issues, President Sisi underlined the importance of collective action while opposing unilateral environmental policies that disproportionately affect developing countries. He urged developed countries to honour their climate finance commitments and identified the upcoming COP30 summit, to be held in Brazil this November, as a critical juncture for advancing these issues of direct relevance to the interests of developing countries.
