CAIRO – A rare total lunar eclipse will turn the moon red over Egypt and some Arab countries on Sunday, said Mohamed Gharib, Solar Research Professor at the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics (NRIAG).
Speaking with Extra News channel, the professor said the partial phase of the eclipse will start at 7:27 p.m. while the total one will start at 8:31pm. when Earth slips perfectly between the sun and the moon, creating what is known as a blood moon.
Illustrating more on the blood moon phenomenon, the professor said shorter blue wavelengths of light are typically scattered by the Earth’s atmosphere, leaving longer red wavelengths to pass through – hence the red tones of the moon.
He said the lunar eclipse will be more visible in open areas, urging citizens to watch such a magnificent astronomical phenomenon.
