Most polling stations for Egypt’s Senate election opened on time at 9 am on Monday with only a few experiencing minor delays, the National Election Authority (NEA) announced.
Delays were caused mainly by difficulties in the arrival of some judges at polling stations, especially those assigned outside their home areas, Director of NEA’s Executive Office Ahmed Bendari said in statements.
Voting is running smoothly in all 8,825 polling stations nationwide, Bendari said.
The official noted that international observer delegations from the Arab League, the African Union, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), and diplomatic mission toured polling stations.
Egyptians began heading to the polls nationwide on Monday and through Tuesday to vote for their Senate representatives from a field of 424 candidates, including 183 independent ones and 241 others representing political parties.
Under the list-based system, a single electoral list — The National List for the Sake of Egypt — is running unopposed in all designated constituencies.
