Egypt has welcomed the announcement by Prime Ministers Mark Carney of Canada and Robert Abela of Malta regarding their countries’ intention to recognize the State of Palestine.
In a statement Thursday by the ministry of foreign affairs, Egypt described the growing international momentum toward recognition as a historic step that supports the long-standing Arab and Egyptian call for the realization of a sovereign Palestinian state, an essential move to uphold the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.
The statement also renewed Egypt’s call on all countries that have yet to recognize the State of Palestine to do so promptly, standing on the right side of history and contributing meaningfully to the implementation of the two-state solution.
It further emphasized the imperativeness of the establishment of a fully sovereign Palestinian state based on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
