Egypt’s Ambassador to Italy and Permanent Representative to UN agencies in Rome, Bassam Rady, announced on Tuesday that the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has awarded the Egyptian Food Bank (EFB) first place in its annual Partnership Award. The Egyptian Food Bank triumphed over 69 other nominations from 37 countries.
Ambassador Rady highlighted this recognition as a significant achievement for Egypt. The FAO noted that the Egyptian Food Bank distinguished itself as the first non-governmental organisation worldwide to address food security on such a wide scale.
The bank has provided support to approximately 24 million people through food aid, nutrition programmes, and economic empowerment initiatives. It collaborates with over 4,000 local organisations and partners across Egypt and contributes directly to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Rady stated that the award reflects the success of Egypt’s comprehensive social protection approach, led by President Abdel Fattah El Sisi. This approach aims to assist various segments of society through sustainable support programmes and partnerships with civil society. He added that the Egyptian embassy in Rome had submitted detailed data on Egypt’s social support initiatives to the FAO, which played a key role in the bank’s selection for the prestigious award.
