The American University in Cairo (AUC) is organising “MySafeUni Day,” an event rich in activities and discussions on ensuring university campuses are safe spaces and free of sexual harassment.
The event will be held on April 5, 2021 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Bassily Auditorium of the AUC New Cairo, a statement by the AUC said.
The event includes a panel with professionals in anti-harassment offices from local and international universities titled “Universities Unite: Combating Harassment on Campus,” to discuss how to ensure safe campuses, sharing their experiences and best practices, it added.
Speakers include Amira Tawadros, executive manager of Anti-Sexual Harassment Unit, Cairo University; Reem El-Mograby, director of Office of Institutional Equity and Title IX coordinator, AUC; Clarissa Humphreys, sexual misconduct prevention and response manager, Durham University and Mitra Tauk, Equity and Title IX coordinator of the American University in Beirut.
The event will be moderated by Sunanda Holmes, general counsel and chief compliance officer, AUC and Youssef Hashem, AUC student and president of The AUC Debate Society, according to the statement.
The event will also include an interactive audience-led conversation on what harassment means lead by AUC faculty and students; live theatre performances by AUC’s Department of Arts; and talks by AUC notable alumni, including Omar Samra ’00, adventurer, entrepreneur and motivational speaker; Gala El Hadidi ’05 ’07, international mezzo-soprano; Tarek El Ebiary ’12, actor; and Ahmed Alaa Fayed ’13, ’13, assistant professor of management and public policy at Nile University.
The event is part of AUC’s initiative “AUCSpeakUp,” and is led by AUC students, alumni and the AUC community as a whole, the statement added.
It is conducted in English with simultaneous translation into Arabic.
