Situated in the heart of Alexandria, the Antoniades Garden is much more than a picturesque escape for winter travellers.

The garden is rather a living testament to centuries of history, culture, and natural beauty.

This sprawling park is a mosaic of Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and European influences, encapsulating stories of royal opulence, artistic evolution, and botanical wonder.

On a winter morning, with the Mediterranean breeze softly sweeping through the city, a walk through Antoniades Garden feels like a journey back in time.

Marble statues, shimmering fountains, and ancient trees combine to create a serene ambiance, where the grandeur of history harmonizes with the soothing embrace of nature.

To delve into the garden’s timeless charm, The Egyptian Gazette spoke with Egyptologist Hussein Abdel Bassir, director of the Antiquities Museum at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.

He said the garden is among the oldest parks in the world, describing it as an “unrivalled treasure” of Egyptian heritage.

“It’s not just a garden, but a reflection of how Alexandria has danced with different cultures throughout its history,” Abdel Bassir said.

A journey through history

The origins of the garden date back to the Ptolemaic era (323–30 BC), when it served as a luxurious retreat for Alexandria’s elite.

Even then, it showcased the Egyptians’ deep appreciation for landscape design, featuring meticulously arranged flowers and rare plants gathered from across their vast empire.

Over time, as the garden passed through the Roman and Byzantine periods, it was adorned with dramatic statues and fountains that reflected the grandeur of Roman artistry.

With the advent of Islam in Egypt and later the rise of the Ottoman Empire, the garden embraced new design elements, subtly integrating Islamic influences.

By the 19th century, under the vision of Mohammed Ali Pasha, widely regarded as the architect of modern Alexandria, the park was reimagined as a European-style masterpiece, tailored to the tastes of the era’s aristocracy.

During this transformation, it came under the stewardship of John Antoniades, a wealthy Greek merchant, who left a lasting legacy.

Inspired by the opulence of Versailles, Antoniades infused the landscape with French elegance before ultimately gifting the garden to the Egyptian government, securing it as a treasure for the public.

Today, Antoniades Garden stands as a living chronicle of artistic evolution, inviting visitors to explore centuries of shifting aesthetics while offering a tranquil escape into nature.

A living sanctuary

Beyond its historical significance, Antoniades Garden is a haven for nature enthusiasts, offering visitors an intimate connection to rare flora from around the world.

Majestic camphor trees, regal palms, and tropical imports from Asia, Africa, and South America flourish here, creating a lush ecological treasure trove.

The centuries-old perennial trees are not just a nod to the past. They also foster biodiversity and contribute to Alexandria’s environmental stability in the face of its urban sprawl.

Small lakes and fountains scattered throughout the garden reflect an enduring commitment to ecological harmony while adding a sense of serenity to the landscape.

Pathways – shaded by towering trees – lead visitors to the park’s hidden treasures. Whether it is the marble statue of Venus, honouring the Roman goddess of love, or the majestic lion sculptures standing guard as symbols of strength, every corner of the garden tells a story steeped in art, mythology, and history.

A cultural icon

Antoniades Garden is more than just a place of natural beauty or historical significance. It stands as a vibrant cultural landmark. With its classically designed Antoniades Palace, an architectural masterpiece, the site seamlessly blends sophistication with history, hosting cultural events and social gatherings in a setting of timeless elegance.

At the same time, the garden’s tranquil greenhouses serve as a sanctuary for rare tropical plants, safeguarding their existence for generations to come.

The garden also frequently transforms into a lively hub for art exhibitions and musical performances, solidifying its role as a cultural landmark in Alexandria.

Its serene charm attracts both locals and visitors, who come to capture timeless photos or share meaningful moments with loved ones.

Whether visitors are passionate about history, captivated by flora, or simply in search of a serene retreat, Antoniades Garden offers something for everyone. This harmonious blend of history, art, and nature serves as a powerful reminder of Alexandria’s role as a meeting point of civilisations.

Its meandering pathways invite visitors to step beyond the bounds of time and immerse themselves in its enchanting allure.
