The presence of Gianni Infantio, the current FIFA President, at the opening ceremony of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon, insinuated a myriad of facts, and annulled some other accusations.
To begin with, before the commencement of the tournament many fans and the media were not sure it was going to be held as planned. The fear of the AFCON’s cancellation was fuelled by the refusal of some European clubs to release their players on time.
Despite these allegations, the tournament was able to kick off successfully and promptly. Also, as aforementioned, the opening ceremony witnessed the presence of Infantio, who by attending wanted to convey a set of messages.
First, due to his role as FIFA President, Infantio should support all the continental tournaments, with impartiality while dealing with all the continental federations.
His turnout also highlighted many other facts, perhaps the most prominent of which was that he has nothing to do with the postponement nor the cancellation of AFCON’s 2022 edition, as some people were previously claiming.
Finally, it was affirmed that what was reported during the recent period was due to the existence of some ongoing discrepancies within the Executive Office of the CAF.
