Egypt’s Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly has appointed Ahmed Ghoneim, previously CEO of the National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation (NMEC), as the new CEO of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) authority for a one-year term.
Ghoneim thus becomes the first CEO of the authority, which was established and organised under Prime Minister’s Decree No. 2795 of 2016 and Law No. 9 of 2020, recognising it as an economic general body overseen by the minister responsible for antiquities affairs.
Ghoneim has held the CEO position at the NMEC in Fustat since 2020.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister appointed AlTayeb Abbas, Assistant Minister of Tourism and Antiquities for Antiquities Affairs at the Grand Egyptian Museum, as the CEO of the NMEC Authority for the ensuing year, succeeding Ghoneim.
Abbas has been serving in his role at the GEM since 2020, where he was instrumental in the implementation and successful pilot of the museum’s display scenario in its main galleries, which opened last Wednesday.
