Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares has hailed the vital role Egypt is playing in the Middle East.
Addressing a press conference with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty on Wednesday, the Spanish top diplomat said that his visit to Egypt is part of efforts to cement Egyptian-Spanish relations.
He said the relations between the two sides are strongly growing now especially in light of the important developments in the Middle East.
The Spanish top diplomat said that Egypt is a key partner to Spain in the Middle East and Africa.
Albares said he will meet minister Abdelatty in the near future in Barcelona, adding the meeting would be a good opportunity for dialogue on peace and negotiations in the Middle East.
He said that Egypt and Spain have a common viewpoint on peace and de-escalation in the Middle East, pointing out to the joint efforts to reach a ceasefire deal in the Gaza Strip, releasing detainees and increasing aid supplies to the Palestinian enclave.
He said that Egypt and Spain are working on achieving a two-state solution, adding that Egypt and Spain are also working on supporting the Palestinian people.
He added that Spain is supporting the mission of UNRWA in the Palestinian territories, describing the UN organization as indispensable and irreplaceable to continue offering support for the Palestinian people.
He said that his country extended 43 million euros to UNRWA since October 7, 2023.
Asked about Lebanon, the Spanish top diplomat said Lebanon is a sovereign country, stressing the importance of implementing resolution 1701 and reach a ceasefire.
