Egypt’s Minister of Social Solidarity Maya Morsy met on Thursday with Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for the Near East and North Africa at the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Abdul Hakim Elwaer, to explore ways to strengthen cooperation between the ministry and the FAO.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Minister of Social Solidarity, Engineer Margaret Sarofim.
Discussions focused on expanding joint projects, including the initiative to improve livelihoods, nutrition, and economic empowerment of rural women in Minya Governorate. The project aims to reduce poverty, achieve food security, and promote climate-resilient livelihoods in rural communities by building a more sustainable and resilient food system.
The project will benefit around 2,000 rural families across ten villages selected from the presidential “Decent Life” initiative in Minya. It is expected to generate 2,000 direct jobs and 2,000 seasonal employment opportunities for women, youth, and people with disabilities.
The meeting also explored collaboration on the ministry’s Rural Industries Support Fund, with the ministry seeking to leverage FAO’s expertise to bring about tangible improvements for the beneficiaries of its services.
