Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi received on Tuesday Deputy United Nations Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, and the accompanying delegation, which included Elena Panova, the UN Resident Coordinator in Egypt, and Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin, the UN Special Envoy for Financing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The meeting was attended by Foreign Minister, Dr. Badr Abdel Aaty.

According to the presidential spokesperson, Deputy Secretary-General Mohammed conveyed the greetings of UN Secretary-General António Guterres to President El-Sisi, expressing his hopes for continued cooperation and coordination between Egypt and the UN. President El Sisi praised Guterres’ positive stance on the challenges facing the region.

The meeting also dwelt on regional issues, including efforts to de-escalate tensions and restore stability. The two sides discussed the ongoing initiatives to secure a ceasefire in Gaza and facilitate the exchange of detainees, as well as Egypt’s intensive efforts to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

Both sidesemphasised the critical role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), whose work is of utmost importance amid the current humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Additionally, the situation in Sudan was addressed, with President El Sisi reaffirming Egypt’s commitment to securing a ceasefire and safeguarding Sudan’s resources, its people, and state institutions. He stressed the need for concerted international and regional efforts to provide support and resolve the ongoing political crisis and humanitarian disaster in Sudan.

Deputy Secretary-General Mohammed commended Egypt’s active role in international forums, particularly within the United Nations, and its efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region and prevent a broader regional conflict with potentially severe consequences. She also highlighted the UN’s appreciation for Egypt’s crucial humanitarian role in managing refugee issues in the region. Mohammed affirmed the UN’s commitment to intensifying cooperation and coordination with Egypt across all levels.
