CAIRO – Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty received a phone call from the UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Tor Wennesland.

They discussed the dangerous developments witnessed by the region recently as well as risks of expanding of the scale of escalation in a way that may lead to wide-scale expansions jeopardizing the stability of the region and its people, said Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zied

Abdelatty briefed the top UN official on his communication with number of regional and international parties, in order to contain the situation and defuse tension, the spokesman said.

The foreign minister affirmed the necessity of rallying international efforts, topped by efforts of the UN and key international powers, towards putting an end to the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip and the humanitarian suffering there.

The top Egyptian diplomat said that continuation of the Gaza crisis exacerbates the complexity of the situation a day after another, noting that Israel should halt the policies of escalation and assassination and violating the territorial integrity of countries in the region, the spokesman added.

Meanwhile, the UN senior official conveyed serious concerns of the UN and its secretary general regarding the mounting regional tension.

Wennesland thanked Egypt for its efforts to reach a solution to the Gaza Strip crisis along with handling its humanitarian and security repercussions, the spokesman noted.

Both sides agreed on continuing consultation and coordination and exchanging assessments throughout the upcoming period, the spokesman added.
