CAIRO – Former ambassador of Egypt to Yemen ambassador Youssef el-Sharqawi said the provocative Israeli military actions in the region and the failure of the international community to stop the war on the Gaza Strip are reasons behind expansion of conflict and dragging the countries of the Middle East into regional war.
In exclusive statements to MENA Sunday, the former Egyptian ambassador warned that the Middle East is on the verge of explosion due to the inability of the international community and the UN Security Council to deter the Israeli government from violating the international law, international norms and conventions, attacking the sovereignty of neighboring countries and targeting the Iranian Consulate in Damascus.
Sharqawi stressed that Egypt has previously warned of the outbreak of a regional war due to the repercussions of Israel’s war against the Gaza Strip and is pressing ahead with its efforts and contacts with all parties concerned to try to contain the situation, stop escalation and spare the region the risk of instability and threat to its peoples’ interests.
The former Egyptian ambassador to Yemen said the absence of security and stability in the Middle East will provide opportunities for the re-emergence of armed and terrorist groups again, in addition to the creation of blocs and polarization that harm the interests of countries in the region involve them into conflicts and crises.
He stressed that the US which provided unlimited support to the Israeli government in its war against the Palestinians must redouble its efforts to dissuade Israel from continuing its war against the Gaza Strip and stop directing strikes inside Syria and Lebanon, in order to avoid any responses by Iran that threaten to ignite conflict and set region on fire.
