Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukri has reiterated the necessity of containing the growing tension in the region and affirmed Cairo’s full support for the security and stability of Iraq.

Minister Shoukri expressed this position during a phone call he received from his Iraqi counterpart Fuad Hussein on Monday, the Foreign Ministry’s Spokesman, Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid said.

In the course of the call, the two foreign ministers reviewed the various aspects of bilateral relations between Egypt and Iraq, and agreed to continue coordination in order to implement existing bilateral co-operation projects.

Noting the strength and depth of relations between Egypt and Iraq, the two ministers expressed mutual aspiration to elevate these relations to broader horizons that serve the interests of the two brotherly peoples and preserve their security and stability.

Discussions during the call also dealt with the military escalation that the region is now witnessing, including recent developments in the Iraqi and Syrian arenas, Spokesman Abu Zeid said.

In this connection, he added, Minister Shoukri stressed the necessity of work to contain the growing tension and asserted Cairo’s full support for the security and stability of Iraq.

The situation in the Gaza Strip was reviewed during the call, with Minister Shoukri reasserting the necessity of a ceasefire and the need to allow the entry of aid on a sustainable basis to address the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Strip, Spokesman Abu Zeid said.

In this respect, Minister Shoukri underlined the risks implied in widening the scope of the conflict in the region due to the ongoing war in Gaza, which threatens to push the region into further instability and endanger the interests of its peoples, the Foreign Ministry spokesman said.
