CAIRO – The Arab League Council has welcomed the decision by the International Court of Justice to rule over emergency measures demanded by South Africa in its case against Israel’s war in Gaza.
The ICJ said it had jurisdiction to probe the case against Israel (the occupying power) for failing to honour its commitments under the genocide convention.
The AL Council also welcomed the ICJ’s rejection of Israel’s request to throw out the genocide case.
An AL statement on Monday also praised diplomatic and legal efforts exerted by South Africa to try Israel before the top court.
It urged all countries and international and regional organisations, including the UN Security Council, to act and impose sanctions to oblige Israel (the occupying power) to implement the provisional measures ordered by the ICJ and to immediately stop its crimes against the Palestinian people.
The AL Council also warned that any country or party supporting Israel (the occupying power) in any way would bear responsibility in front of the ICJ.
