President Abdel Fattah El Sisi met in Cairo yesterday President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

Talks between the president and the senior European official focused on the Israeli military escalation in the Palestinian territories, the Egyptian Presidency said in a statement after the meeting.

It added that the Egyptian leader confirmed Egypt’s position on the need for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the protection of civilians, and ensuring the delivery of relief assistance to the people of Gaza.

The residents of Gaza, the president said, are subjected to enormous human suffering.

He underscored the need for the international community to shoulder its responsibilities and implement the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly in this regard.

President Sisi also briefed der Leyen about the efforts Egypt makes in this context.

The president also referred to Egypt’s reception of wounded Palestinians and evacuation of foreign nationals.

The president of the European Commission presented, meanwhile, her assessment of the developments in Gaza, the Egyptian presidency said.

The European Union, she said, highly appreciates the essential role played by Egypt in this regard.

During the meeting, President Sisi also reiterated Egypt’s categorical rejection of the displacement of Palestinians, whether internally or externally, especially to Sinai.

Der Leyen agreed with this Egyptian position, confirming Europe’s rejection of the displacement of the Palestinians.

President Sisi and President der Leyen also agreed that the achievement of just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution would be the only way out of the current conflict, the presidency said.

Discussions between the president and der Leyen also tackled means of strengthening co-operation between Egypt and the European Union, in the light of close ties between the two sides.

The president and the European official also agreed to keep working to enhance these relations and push them to broader horizons in various fields.

Attending the meeting were Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukri, and a host of senior European Commission officials.
