LONDON ― Arsenal’s Stina Blackstenius came off the bench to score a late winner as her side beat Manchester City 2-1 in the Women’s Super League (WSL), while Bristol City notched up their first win of the season with a thrilling 3-2 victory over West Ham United.
Manchester City, who slipped to second place in the standings following Chelsea’s 6-0 thrashing of Aston Villa, came into the game on a fine run of form but they fell behind when Steph Catley put the Gunners ahead in the 14th minute, Reuters reported.
Chelsea leads the table on 13 points after five games, three ahead of Manchester City, Spurs, Liverpool and Arsenal.
City’s teenage keeper Khiara Keating then stepped into the spotlight, conceding a penalty for a foul on Cloe Lacasse but saving Kim Little’s spot kick in the 20th minute, and it was not the last time she was the centre of attention.
Chloe Kelly thought she had made the most of that miss when she drove home the equaliser for City in the 72nd minute, but Keating completely misjudged a late long ball that bounced over her, allowing Blackstenius in to nab the winner.
After four straight defeats, Bristol City finally tasted victory in the WSL as they came from a goal down to beat West Ham 3-2 away.
Bristol City banked their first points since returning to the top flight with victory away to West Ham. The Hammers led inside the half hour against Bristol City, Viviane Asseyi converting from the spot after Megan Connolly was penalised for a hand ball in the box.
Just ten minutes later City had turned the game round. Amalie Thestrup heading in a Rachel Furness cross and Ella Powell firing them in front when following up Mackenzie Arnold’s parry from Amy Rodgers shot.
The Hammers did go in on level terms though, Riko Ueki with a stoppage-time goal, only for Brooke Aspin to head in a 55th-minute decider from Connolly’s free kick.
Spurs had to settle for a point at home to Everton, who equalised with a late penalty. Grace Clinton gave Tottenham Hotspur the lead close to half time, heading home from a Drew Spence cross.
But with five minutes to go, it was Clinton who gave away a spot-kick which Aurora Galli converted.
Everton’s Aurora Galli scored from the spot in the 85th minute to give her side a 1-1 draw away to Tottenham Hotspur, while Liverpool scored a late goal to secure a 2-1 home victory over Leicester City, which sees them one of four sides sitting three points off leaders Chelsea.
The Reds made the breakthrough three minutes after the restart, Melissa Lawley netting from a tight angle after a ball by Grace Fisk.
Missy Goodwin had the Foxes back on level terms before the hour mark, Jutta Rantala with the assist.
The Reds restored their advantage six minutes from the end of the ninety, Marie-Therese Höbinger finding the net from Mia Enderby’s cut-back.
