The high attendance in the Cairo Peace Summit reflects Egypt’s global status, as well as the credibility of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and the world’s concern about the current crisis in the Gaza Strip, Presidential Spokesman Ahmed Fahmy said in televised statements Saturday.
The Egyptian Presidency made a great effort to organize the Cairo Peace Summit with a wide participation of world leaders, Fahmy added.
Egypt aimed at mobilizing the international community’s consensus on the situation in Gaza. This does not mean reaching identical positions, but rather increasing areas of understanding and a common position among all, the spokesman said.
International politics does not always have a uniformity of viewpoints, especially when there are raging crises. Coming up with a final statement is not a criterion for judging the summit. The Security Council itself failed to produce any outcomes, he added.
Egypt succeeded in highlighting the points of agreement so that they can be built upon, including the seriousness of the humanitarian situation, the necessity of bringing aid into Gaza through the Rafah Crossing in a sustainable manner, respecting the rights of civilians and the two-state solution, Fahmy stressed.
The points of difference were the level of condemnation and the ceasefire. This was clear in the Security Council as well, he added.
At the summit, Egypt demonstrated to the world its clear position on rejecting the displacement of the people of Gaza to Sinai, the spokesman affirmed.
