Minister of Local Development Mahmoud Shaarawi Friday met with Randa Aboul-Hosn, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Egypt to discuss co-operation.

The meeting focused on a project, implemented in co-operation with the UNDP to support the Local Development Ministry.

The discussions also dwelt on co-operation between the ministry and the UNDP in decentralisation and local administrative reform in Egypt, along with training administrative workers.

Shaarawi highlighted the importance of co-operation with the UNDP in advancing decentralisation and building the capacities of administrative workers.

The talks also covered the national programme for the rural development, the first programme of its kind on such a scale.

The programme would improve the living conditions in rural areas by offering better services, Shaarawi said, adding that all state authorities were co-operating in the implementation of the programme and removing any obstacles to its progress.

The first phase of the programme covers the upgrade of 51 administrative centres in 20 governorates serving 1,443 villages, Shaarawi said.

He noted that around 17.5 million people live in these villages, including 11.6 million in southern Egypt.
