Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit renewed the League’s firm commitment to preserving water rights of Egypt and Sudan with regard to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) file and its support for the efforts to reach a legal fair, and binding agreement on this issue that takes into account the interests of all parties.
Aboul Gheit, who won a second term as Secretary General of the Arab League, met Wednesday with Sudanese Foreign Minister Maryam Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi and affirmed the League’s full commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Sudanese state. He also reiterated the League’s support for all legitimate measures taken by Sudan to extend its sovereignty and enforce its authority over all its territories.

An official source in the League’s General Secretariat said that Aboul Gheit congratulated Al Mahdi on her appointment as Foreign Minister and also praised the formation of the new Sudanese government headed by Abdullah Hamdok, following the signing of the Juba Peace Agreement in Sudan.
The Arab League chief also stressed the League’s commitment to continuing its support for the Sudanese state and its institutions. He noted that the Arab League stood with the people of Sudan in order to complete the important political transition process that the country is going through.
