Egypt welcomed on Wednesday the presidential statement issued by the UN Security Council which encouraged Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan to resume negotiations on Ethiopia’s Nile dam as part of the negotiating track led by the President of the African Union.
The track aims at completing quickly the drafting of the text for a binding legal agreement on filling and operating the dam within a reasonable time frame.
The presidential statement also encouraged the observers who had previously participated in the negotiating meetings to continue to actively support the negotiation process with a view to facilitating the settlement of technical and legal issues or any other outstanding issues.
A statement released by the Foreign Ministry said that the issuance of this presidential statement by the Security Council confirms the special importance that the members of the Council attach to the issue of Ethiopia’s dam and in recognition of the importance of containing its negative repercussions on international peace and security.
Egypt also affirmed that the presidential statement issued by the Security Council on the dam in light of its mandatory nature, represents an important impetus for the efforts made for the success of the African negotiating track, which requires Ethiopia to engage seriously and with a sincere political will in order to reach a binding legal agreement.
