Egyptian Environment Minister Yasmine Fouad called for establishing mechanisms to merge the three Rio Conventions on Biodiversity, Climate Change and Desertification, given the great impact of climate change on the African continent.
Fouad’s call came during her participation in the second meeting of Africa Environment Partnership Platform (AEPP), which was held via video-conference on Sunday.
The meeting addressed how African countries could make a sustainable recovery from the coronavirus repercussions and achieve economic growth and prosperity.
In her speech, the environment minister shed light on the vital role that could be played by non-governmental organizations in transferring the necessary knowledge and expertise to combine the three Rio Conventions on Biodiversity, Climate Change and Desertification.
She also underlined the importance of benefiting from local communities in protected areas to cut biodiversity loss, combat desertification and face the climate change effects.
Fouad stressed the necessity of taking quick steps to build back better, noting that African states are in need of having sustainable funding and building sustainable national capabilities.
