MP says parliament to play significant role in activating human rights strategy

The parliament will play a significant role in activating the national human rights strategy, Tarek El Khloy, a member of the House of Deputies representing the Coordination’s Committee of Parties’ Youth Leaders and Politicians (CPYP), said Saturday.
The parliament is a major and essential partner in implementing the strategy, in addition to its oversight role in monitoring the government’s performance, Khloy told a panel discussion held during the national strategy’s launch in the presence of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi.
“We have established state institutions and have been able to make progress in combating terrorism. Now, the Egyptian state can mull on tools to improve human rights more largely and broadly,” he added.
President Sisi used his constitutional powers to release youths imprisoned in protest cases. These young people are in dire need of societal integration, which is linked to legislative amendments, Kholy said.
He also stressed the importance of documenting divorce because it directly affects women and children’s rights. “We are in urgent need of a societal movement and dialogue on the Personal Status Law with all its contents and points of contention among all parties.”
The lawmaker added that the Code of Criminal Procedure is a main issue that needs to be developed given its significant impact on upholding justice and the protection of witnesses.
