Egyptian Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad announced yesterday that the ministry discovered the fossils of a semiaquatic whale that lived 43 million years ago.
This discovery came in co-operation with the Valley of the Whales paleontological site team, the Higher Education and Scientific Research Ministry and the Mansoura University.
In statements, she added that examining the fossils was finalised by researchers from Mansoura University that reflects the ministry’s efforts to support scientific research.
Paleontologists have named the semiaquatic whale after Anubis, the ancient Egyptian god of death.
The newly-discovered species, dubbed Phiomicetus Anubis, walked on land and swam in the water and had powerful jaw muscles that would have allowed it to easily chomp down on prey when it was alive more than 43 million years ago.
