CAIRO / NEW YORK – Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met his Israeli counterpart Eli Cohen on the sidelines of the proceedings of the high-level segment of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said the two sides discussed files connected with bilateral relations and cooperation in trade, investment and energy domains, especially under the umbrella of the East Mediterranean Gas Forum.

Talks between both ministers dealt with the latest developments of the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, with Shoukry urging the Israeli side to give priority to the path of calm and avoid escalation to avert the dangers of entering into a vicious circle of violence which keeps all parties farther away from achieving the goals of peace and the implementation of the vision of the two-state solution, the spokesman added according to MENA.

The Egyptian top diplomat reiterated that a comprehensive and just peace based on the restoration of Palestinian rights and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital is the only guarantee to achieve prosperity, stability and peaceful coexistence in the region, according to the spokesman.

He also stressed Egypt’s commitment to continuing all efforts to encourage the parties to return to the negotiating table to achieve this desired goal, Abu Zeid said.
