Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi followed up the state’s plan to develop the historic Cairo area, in light of its deteriorating conditions over the past decades and the increased challenges, difficulties and problems, including the spread of random markets and the severe damage to buildings and cemeteries from groundwater as well as traffic congestion.

The President’s remarks came during his meeting on Thursday with Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouli as well as a host of ministers and senior government officials, Presidency Spokesman Ahmed Fahmy said.

The President said During the meeting that the area has become a serious threat to a vital part of Egypt’s ancient history and heritage. Therefore, it requires an integrated vision for comprehensive development in a way that ends the problems that hinder the lives of citizens and preserves the unique historical value of the area.

The President was also briefed on the executive situation of the development efforts of the area, especially with regard to linking it with a network of various tourist paths and traffic axes and the formation of a network of green spaces. He was also apprised of efforts to revive traditional areas and link archaeological and tourist sites and historical cemeteries, with the aim of preserving heritage and boosting tourism.

The President was also briefed on the obstacles facing the implementation of development plans and directed the government to ensure harmony of policies and executive measures to establish an integrated system aimed at developing the urban and historical image of the area, including the upgrading of the surrounding residential areas.

The President also stressed the need to preserve the distinctive character of the heritage of this area and its archaeological and architectural value in line with development efforts throughout the country in order to achieve the aspirations of Egyptians towards building a strong and advanced country that provides a high quality of life for all citizens.
