Cairo hosts on Thursday a summit conference of Sudan’s neighbours to discuss efforts to end the ongoing conflict in the country, and the negative repercussions it is having on its immediate neighbours and on the security and stability of the entire region.
The move to host such the summit comes in light of the ongoing crisis in Sudan and reflects President Abdel Fattah El Sisi’s keenness on drafting a common vision for the countries neighbouring Sudan, Presidency Spokesman Ahmed Fahmy said earlier this week.
The conference will seek to take steps towards solving the crisis, stopping bloodshed and sparing the Sudanese people the negative impacts of the conflict, in addition to curbing the grave impact on the neighbouring countries, as well as regional security and stability.
Sudanese writer and researcher Magdi Abdel Aziz has highlighted the official and popular welcome in the Sudan of the Cairo summit.
In remarks to the Egyptian Al-Qahera News channel, Abdel Aziz stressed that the relation between Sudan and Egypt is one of common destiny.
Egypt’s position is based on a logical and solid base as reflected in the statement of the Egyptian presidency while announcing the summit, he said.
Unlike previous initiatives seeking an end to the crisis, this one reiterates respect of the Sudanese people’s will, indicating that Egypt is trying its best to draft a common vision for the Sudan’s neighbours, to reach a full and a comprehensive ceasefire.
One major element of the initiative is the categorical rejection of foreign interference in internal Sudanese affairs, he said.
Abdel Aziz referred to an official statement by the Sudanese people to look positively to the Egyptian initiative, noting that the warring parties in the country have always spoken with the same positiveness about Cairo’s role in the Sudan.
Today’s summit also aims to help preserve the Sudanese state and its potentials.
It will also seek to develop effective mechanisms with the participation of Sudan’s neighbouring countries to find a peaceful settlement of the conflict in coordination with other regional and international tracks seeking the same goal, the Egyptian Presidency spokesman noted.
