CAIRO – Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit asserted support to UN efforts to settle the Libyan crisis at the political and security levels, pressing the need for encouraging Libyan parties to return to dialogue to ease any measures for holding elections as soon as possible.

This came in a statement released by the Arab League after Abul Gheit’s talks with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on the fringe of a meeting on the UN’s cooperation with the League of Arab States in New York.

Arab League Secretary General Gamal Roshdi said talks covered means of pushing forward cooperation between the two organizations in the political, economic and cultural fields in the coming phase.

They also exchanged views on key regional and international issues topped by the Palestinian issue, the developments in Sudan, Libya, Syria and Yemen, added the spokesman.

The two sides agreed on coordinating efforts to contain such crises in a way that achieves security and stability in the region and the Middle East in general, said the spokesman.

Abul Gheit reiterated that the two state solution will remain the base for any projected settlement between the Palestinians and Israelis and the only track for realizing peace, the spokesman said.

Guterres, for his part, reiterated that the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) should shoulder its responsibilities and fulfil its commitments towards the Palestinian refugees, noting that the agency is really on the verge of a financial collapse.

The two sides also affirmed the need for intensifying their efforts at the international arena to contain the situation in Sudan in light of the escalated humanitarian crisis there and threats against civilians as a result of continued military operations. They also pressed the importance of abiding by the peace truce and ceasefire agreement reached in Jeddah, added the spokesman.

Professor Fawzy Ibrahim, dean of EAEAT, briefed the minister about the work progress of the academy and its proposed development plan for the new academic year of 2023/2024.
