The Alexandria National Refining and Petrochemical Company (ANRPC) and the Norwegian company Skatek, a leader in the field of green energy solutions, yesterday signed an agreement for a green methanol production plant, the first of its kind in Egypt and the Middle East.

Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tarek el-Mulla and Norwegian Ambassador in Cairo Hilde Klemetsdal attended the signing.

ANRPC chairman Salah Gaber and Skatek CEO Terrier Belskog signed the agreement.

The agreement is a new step to carry out more green energy projects and low-emissions fuel in co-operation with leading international companies, the minister said.

El-Mulla added that his ministry has adopted a strategy to remove carbon from oil and gas industry operations and to set up projects for green products.

The new plant will produce 40,000 tons annually of green methanol, which can be increased to 200,000 tons a year in order to encourage the transition to green production, which will open new export horizons for the petrochemical sector.

The project is set to put Egypt on the global map of green fuel producers.

A $450 million green biofuel depot, to be located in Damietta Port, will also supply shipping.

For his part, Belskog described the project as a “new step to enhance co-operation with Egypt”, which is the company’s top priority providing high-quality sustainable green fuel at competitive prices.

This project will place Egypt at the top of the list of countries that manufacture and export green chemical products and makes it a destination for global shipping lines, Belskog said.
